"Celebrate 365 - Community, Culture, History" campaign moves us beyond celebrating Juneteenth for just one day of the year.
Literacy encompasses abilities beyond
just reading and writing, including digital, financial, health, media, and civic literacy.
Join us as we continue to address these issues and others as we move forward together creating a better tomorrow.
Additional activities and events will be held during the year.
The first activity of our "Celebrate 365 - Community, Culture, History" Campaign is
YMCA/NAACP-♥️ To Read: Book Drive & Library Campaign.
Our goal is to introduce to some and ignite in others the joy of reading and the benefits that come with having a library card.
This activity began on Juneteenth and will conclude on September 19th.
The short list provides just some of the possibilities.
Currently many of these books and those listed on our Cultural Awareness page, linked below for your convenience, are available and reasonably priced on-line and in brick and mortar retailers.
NAACP activist Kareem Weaver sets out to reform the low reading scores in his home of Oakland, California. Featuring stories from Weaver's own life, a teacher and two American families, The Right to Read dives into the fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational skill for life-long success: the ability to read.
Through personal anecdotes from Weaver, insights from a dedicated teacher, and narratives of two American families.
Access and watch the "Right To Read" by using your public library card* or your university login.

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today."

“Knowledge is power.” The ability to read provides access to that power, to information, and opportunities that can help level the playing field for all individuals regardless of their race or socioeconomic background.
Reading is a powerful tool for developing social and cultural awareness. This awareness is crucial for fostering a sense of global citizenship and preparing children to navigate an increasingly interconnected and diverse world with respect and understanding.
